Delivering An Excellent Wedding Speech

If you are like most, then you are probably not very comfortable delivering a speech or toast of any kind. In fact you may have never given a public speech ever. Do not worry it is not something that many people often. However it is very important to do well when called upon. Delivering a good wedding speech that will be remembered for a long time after the day is the key to success here.

As a friend or family member of the bride and groom, you are likely to be asked to prepare a speech for the wedding reception. As simple as it may seem many people do not know where to start.

You may be asking, “ Then where do I start?” Most people have no clue what they want to say in a wedding speech or toast, let alone how to say it. Sincerity, humor, flow, impact are the keys to delivering a good wedding speech.

There are essentially three accepted speeches at a wedding reception; they are the bride’s father, bridegroom, and best man. These are not always the only speeches that occur at a wedding, but are generally the only ones given. We will discuss the type of speech each person listed should give.

The Brides Father

When called upon by the best man the bride’s father will give a toast or speech about the health and happiness of the bride and groom. Normally the speech will start with welcoming the groom’s parents, relatives of both families and other guests alike. Then he will go on to say a few words about his daughter and continue from there.


The bridegroom speaks on behalf of himself and his new bride, thanking his parents for their love and support over the years, and for good wishes in the future. He will also thank everyone for their gifts and mention any persons that are close to the family who could not make it to the ceremony. Bridegroom will then propose a toast of the brides maids, and thank them for a job well done, and present them with a small gift as a token of their appreciation.

Best Man

One of the best mans duties are to respond to the toast of the bridegroom on behalf of the bridesmaids. His speech being light hearted, fun, and should be the highlight of the reception. This is the last of the three speeches so make it good.
