Tips on choosing your wedding florist
At the first thought, choosing the flowers for your wedding may seem a small insignificant detail. But a big success lies in small details (like the type and colour of the flowers, the arrangements). You can handle the situation two ways: either you take care of it yourself (especially if you're on a tight budget) or you hire a wedding florist.
If you want to do it yourself, you may consider the following tips:
- choose your wedding date near a big ceremony (Christmas, Easter, etc) so that the church is already decorated or you can have the religious ceremony in a park which is already full of greenery and flowers
- order flowers that don't easily wilt
- you can also rent elegant potted plants (tropical plants, ficus) to decorate the reception site
- ask some friends to help you with the arrangement because you'll be very busy just before the wedding
- create your own bouquet (your favorite flowers tied with a ribbon will look just lovely)
- choose the colour according to the general colour scheme that you have in mind for your wedding.
But if you want a specialist handling the situation, here are some tips to help you pick the best florist:
- 4-5 months before the wedding ask your family/friends if they can recommend someone
- visit several florists, ask about pricing/services and for references from recent brides and grooms
- look the florist's previous work; ask to see the photo albums
- choose the limit of your budget and tell the florist a sum with 15% smaller; this way you won't get frustrated if somehow he/she goes over budget (and if this doesn't happen, which is quite rare, you'll save some money)
- before you sign the contract ask how large the deposit should be
- although the final decision is yours, be wise and listen to the florist's advice; he/she has more experience and knows more than you do about the subject
- decide what kind of arrangements you want, what kind of bouquets for the bridesmaids, what flowers for the mothers' corsages and the groom/groomsmen' s boutonnières
- discuss about any other flower's arrangements you may need: for the wedding cars, for the rehearsal dinner, for the flavor party,
- ask the florist what are the seasons flowers and choose among them: spring – anemone, lilac, calla lily, gardenia, freesia, orchid, rose, sunflower, tulip; summer - dahlia, tuber rose, gardenia, gladiola, daisy, orchids, rose; fall- gardenia, grapevine, orchid, hydrangea, amaranthus, rose; winter - calla lily, evergreen, gardenia, daffodil, rose, pine cone, sweet pea, tulip
- talk to the florist about any extra fee that may appear: to transport the flowers from the church to the reception site (if possible), to rent supplies like vases, urns, candelabras
- provide him/her all the required information (how many guest tables, the colour and style of your gown)
- don't be afraid to tell him/her your idea of a bride's bouquet or flower's arrangement, but be receptive to any piece of advice.
